関係副詞とは

前置詞＋関係代名詞＝関係副詞

まず、この関係代名詞の文を見てください。
That is the place which I went to last year.（こちらは、私が去年行った場所です。）
という意味ですね。もともとこの文は
・This is the place（こちらは、場所です。）
・I went to the place last year.（私は、去年その場所へ行きました。）
でしたね。
この2つの文を1つにしたのが
That is the place which I went to last year.（こちらは、私が去年行った場所です。）
です。
実は、このとき前置詞toを関係代名詞の前に持ってきて
This is the place to which I went last year.
と書き換えることができます。このときの
to whichを
1語の関係副詞where
で表すことができます。
This is the place where I went last year.
となり、意味は変わりません。

関係副詞には4つある

次の表を見てみよう。

関係副詞を選ぶ際には、先行詞を見て
場所であれば、where
時であれば、when
the reasonであれば、why
the wayであれば、how
を選択します。

関係副詞のwhere

This is the place where I went last year.（こちらは、私が去年行った場所です。）
先行詞がthe place（場所）なので、関係副詞はwhereになっています。

関係副詞のwhen

I remember the day which I first met him on.
I remember the day on which I first met him.
I remember the day when I first met him.（私は、彼にはじめて会った日を覚えている。）
先行詞がthe day（時間）なので、関係副詞はwhenになっています。

関係副詞のwhy

This is the reason which I was absent for.
This is the reason for which I learned English.
This is the reason why I learned English.（こちらが私が英語を学んだ理由です。）
先行詞がthe reason（方法）なので、関係副詞はwhyになっています。

関係副詞のhow

This is the way which I learned English in.
This is the way in which I learned English.
This is （先行詞の省略）how I learned English.
This is the way（関係副詞の省略）I learned English.（こちらが、私が英語を学んだ方法です。）
